http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20120620/lead/lead1.htmlThat statement is really based on many factors. Minister Thwaites expects that students who are placed in schools that are lacking in the basic necessities must beat the odds and score grade ones and twos like their peers in the traditional high school. Any farmer knows that inorder for a plant to grow and do well it needs the right conditions, likewise the students.

GSAT the "apartheid of the education system",
hmm!! The minister of Education who is what we call here in Jamaica, " white Jamaican" is comparing our education system with that of the apartheid system.I have never heard it being described as such, however, I do concur. According to the Free Dictionary apartheid is "An official policy of racial segregation formerly practiced in the Republic of
South Africa, involving political, legal, and economic discrimination against
nonwhites."
When you look at the non- traditional schools and "failing schools" schools in Jamaica that is exactly where you see the poorer class of people ( who are usually the black ones with low socio-economic status who are placed in these non-traditional and non-performing schools). Contrastly, the "white Jamaicans" and the lighter skin, middle and upper class with high socio-economic status are placed in the traditional, high performing schools.
As we seek to celebrate Jamaica 50, let us work to eliminate this "apartheid of the education system"

Frederick The Great
"An educated people can be easily governed.
"
Frederick The Great
Then if this is true I ask myself the question, why then do the politicians spend so little on education? hmmm!! The hardest thing is trying to manage an unruly set of people. Let us not even get to the issue of managing the ones who think they know and know not! It is simple educate the populace and we will have better compliance according to
Frederick The Great

Stipend for teachers
http://iriefm.net/news/headline/temporary-jobs-unemployed-teachers
I wonder why it is that trained professionals are being offered temporary employment in entry level jobs. It is even more insulting that they will not be paid a proper salary but a stipend.
Certainly, there are not enough schools in the island to employ all the unemployed teachers. However, policies and programmes can be put in place to absorb them. This practice of having an overcrowded classroom of 50 students can be solved.
Instead of putting the teachers in jobs they were not trained for they could be placed in the overcrowded classrooms as assistant teachers.
Secondly, the unethical practice of teaching part of the syllabus in class and the rest in extra lessons must stop. Those who cannot afford the extra lessons will get left behind.I know of many teachers who make more in the extra lessons than their monthly salaries from the Education. We must pay close attention to the many ills of the education system.
