Stipend for teachers
http://iriefm.net/news/headline/temporary-jobs-unemployed-teachers
I wonder why it is that trained professionals are being offered temporary employment in entry level jobs. It is even more insulting that they will not be paid a proper salary but a stipend.
Certainly, there are not enough schools in the island to employ all the unemployed teachers. However, policies and programmes can be put in place to absorb them. This practice of having an overcrowded classroom of 50 students can be solved.
Instead of putting the teachers in jobs they were not trained for they could be placed in the overcrowded classrooms as assistant teachers.
Secondly, the unethical practice of teaching part of the syllabus in class and the rest in extra lessons must stop. Those who cannot afford the extra lessons will get left behind.I know of many teachers who make more in the extra lessons than their monthly salaries from the Education. We must pay close attention to the many ills of the education system.

Why the Fuss?

Now I certainly do not see any reason for any teacher to object to the Teaching Act. Teachers are demanding more salary and of course want to be on par with the salaries of those in the private sector who perform similar duties.
Do you they have any idea of how highly selective some of those private sector jobs are. Some of these persons have to submit police record (likewise at High Flyer), do actual tests and not one but two interviews.
For too long it has been too easy to jump into a teaching position. If it is that we are serious about it being an upstanding profession we must have some rules and guidelines.

Changing Education Paradigms

If after you have watched this video, you want to start your toddlers off with home schooling give us a call. Early-childhood foundation is the key. Not all children at the same age are at the same level why sing ABC and colour all day, when they are capable of blending letters, and making their own colouring book. Just an observation.

Whose Child is it anyway?
Often times the name brand secondary high schools do not recommend the student to sit a particular subject, if they do not have an acceptable grade ( whatever that is). This is done not in the interest of the child, but of course to protect the IMAGE of the schools.
On the other hand you do have parents who decide that their child will not take an exam, eventhough they are recommended by the teacher.
As a tutor and a mother I do understand both sides. However, the child must have an input.
I was not recommended for Spanish CSEC exams (in my time it was CXC, I'm not that old) while attending high school. However, my mother allowed me to take it privately and of course I was successful.
We have to look at the learner. Some are motivated by the challenge, some just need the extra help from a tutor, while some just have no interest in that particular subject.

As a tutor I am fully aware of the many hours of extra lessons these students have to endure. Then why is it so hard to believe that these students were just prepared.
