"It no make sense, I can't come here and every day I come I have to play
'aginst 13 and 12, and the referees are most times the best players.
That's robbery!".
These are the word of Jamaica College Manning Cup team coach. In his eyes the referees are "idiots and "nincompoops" but as an adult who gets overzealous about everything and in the end is dragged before a disciplinary committee, hmm! I wonder who is proving to be? Just a question.
There are protocols to follow. These coaches need to lead by example. No wonder we have these young football players arguing with the referees and throwing tantrums like toddlers.

Old Boys include New Girls!
http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20121006/ent/ent1.htmlWell the "boys " are finally allowing the women to partake in their festivities. Kingston College is an all boys Secondary Institution in Jamaica. One of the most sought after schools. I myself is a self proclaimed "Fortis". I find myself repeating their school's motto "FORTIS CADERE CEDERE NON POTEST. (
Well I must say that motto is quite applicable to almost any and everyone.
When I look at the support for KC, girls and women make up a large proportion. Why then did it take so long for them to include us? While I am happy, this action of inclusion should have come waaaaaaaaaaaay sooner.

HIGH FLYER/ HIGH ACHIEVER
http://www.fahan.tas.edu.au/high-achievers?gclid=CNj75crj2rICFQSxnQod_k8A1g
Three things that I pulled from this article that remind me of High Flyer Tutoring Service (HFT).
1. The positive impact a small class size has on learning. That is why we stress one-on-one or small group tutorial. The Jamaican classrooms are woefully overcrowded. "Statistics contained in the 2011 United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) revealed that the country's pupil-teacher ratio was 27.7 to 1."
I really do not think this is correct I see so many 30 odd, 40 odd and even as much as 50 odd students in one class.
2. No pre-selection is done. Come as you are; we will help you grow and achieve your greatest potentials. Unlike the 50 most sought after schools in Jamaica, that obtain pre-selected pupils, this school does not. Therefore, you have young ladies of various academic levels. Once you have the right learning environment any child as long as he or she is willing ,can flourish.
3. HIGH FLYER definition HIGH ACHIEVER

Unemployed Teachers
I am tired of hearing about the myriad of teachers who can't find jobs. The modus operandi ofteachers must change to fit the global economy.  The government need about 50 more schools inorder to employ more teachers and assist with the overcrowding in schools. They do not have the money to build these schools. Therefore we have to look around and create opportunites. http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20120224/letters/letters3.html
"Grow where you are Planted"
http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20120620/lead/lead1.htmlThat statement is really based on many factors. Minister Thwaites expects that students who are placed in schools that are lacking in the basic necessities must beat the odds and score grade ones and twos like their peers in the traditional high school. Any farmer knows that inorder for a plant to grow and do well it needs the right conditions, likewise the students.

GSAT the "apartheid of the education system",
hmm!! The minister of Education who is what we call here in Jamaica, " white Jamaican" is comparing our education system with that of the apartheid system.I have never heard it being described as such, however, I do concur. According to the Free Dictionary apartheid is "An official policy of racial segregation formerly practiced in the Republic of
South Africa, involving political, legal, and economic discrimination against
nonwhites."
When you look at the non- traditional schools and "failing schools" schools in Jamaica that is exactly where you see the poorer class of people ( who are usually the black ones with low socio-economic status who are placed in these non-traditional and non-performing schools). Contrastly, the "white Jamaicans" and the lighter skin, middle and upper class with high socio-economic status are placed in the traditional, high performing schools.
As we seek to celebrate Jamaica 50, let us work to eliminate this "apartheid of the education system"

Frederick The Great

"An educated people can be easily governed.
"
Frederick The Great
Then if this is true I ask myself the question, why then do the politicians spend so little on education? hmmm!! The hardest thing is trying to manage an unruly set of people. Let us not even get to the issue of managing  the ones who think they know and know not! It is simple educate the populace and we will have better compliance according to
Frederick The Great

Stipend for teachers
http://iriefm.net/news/headline/temporary-jobs-unemployed-teachers
I wonder why it is that trained professionals are being offered temporary employment in entry level jobs. It is even more insulting that they will not be paid a proper salary but a stipend.
Certainly, there are not enough schools in the island to employ all the unemployed teachers. However, policies and programmes can be put in place to absorb them. This practice of having an overcrowded classroom of 50 students can be solved.
Instead of putting the teachers in jobs they were not trained for they could be placed in the overcrowded classrooms as assistant teachers.
Secondly, the unethical practice of teaching part of the syllabus in class and the rest in extra lessons must stop. Those who cannot afford the extra lessons will get left behind.I know of many teachers who make more in the extra lessons than their monthly salaries from the Education. We must pay close attention to the many ills of the education system.

Why the Fuss?
http://www.televisionjamaica.com/Programmes/SchoolsChallengeQuiz.aspx/Videos/16873
Now I certainly do not see any reason for any teacher to object to the Teaching Act. Teachers are demanding more salary and of course want to be on par with the salaries of those in the private sector who perform similar duties.
Do you they have any idea of how highly selective some of those private sector jobs are. Some of these persons have to submit police record (likewise at High Flyer), do actual tests and not one but two interviews.
For too long it has been too easy to jump into a teaching position. If it is that we are serious about it being an upstanding profession we must have some rules and guidelines.

Changing Education Paradigms
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U&feature=player_embedded#!
If after you have watched this video, you want to start your toddlers off with home schooling give us a call. Early-childhood foundation is the key. Not all children at the same age are at the same level why sing ABC and colour all day, when they are capable of blending letters, and making their own colouring book. Just an observation.

Whose Child is it anyway?
Often times the name brand secondary high schools do not recommend the student to sit a particular subject, if they do not have an acceptable grade ( whatever that is). This is done not in the interest of the child, but of course to protect the IMAGE of the schools.
On the other hand you do have parents who decide that their child will not take an exam, eventhough they are recommended by the teacher.

As a tutor and a mother I do understand both sides. However, the child must have an input.
I was not recommended for Spanish CSEC exams (in my time it was CXC, I'm not that old) while attending high school. However, my mother allowed me to take it privately and of course I was successful.
We have to look at the learner. Some are motivated by the challenge, some just need the extra help from a tutor, while some just have no interest in that particular subject.

As a tutor I am fully aware of the many hours of extra lessons these students have to endure. Then why is it so hard to believe that these students were just prepared.

To homeschool or not to Homeschool, that is the Question?
www.facebook.com/Holmes.Andre#!/pages/High-Flyer-Tutoring-Service/314152841929338Late last year when then Minister of Education and Prime Minister announced that he is now homeschooling his boys, there was an uproar.Well! I do understand what the uproar was for. Obviously something must be wrong with the system that he himself was in charge of. It made me think of the scenario where a mother would force her child to eat vegetables, but she wouldn't. It really seemed like hypocrisy.
However, as a tutor I do support homeschooling. It is said that four hours in the classroom is equivalent to one hour of one to one tutoring. There is an environment of inclusion and the lessons are individualized.
I too homeschool my son Seth and I must say I have no regrets.
